Understanding Ingredients and Shelf Life of Products – June 2024

How many of us have been into large beauty stores and wonder how long products have been sitting on shelves. I know I do.

Consumer demand for cost effective alternatives to synthetic products is growing and consumers are increasingly concerned with buying ecologically friendly and freshly blended skincare products.

In selecting products, if there is no expiry date, check with the manufacturer. Consider how a product is made, what ingredients it contains and how it is processed.

Our thinking is this. “If it can’t go in my body, it can’t go out to the universe”.

Get into a routine of becoming knowledgeable about the ingredients in your products will help you make better informed decisions about the type of products you wish to purchase.

Skincare and body products usually have 3-6 ingredients listed first. In labelling, they make up at least 75-80% of the product.

For example, you may read aqua (water), glycerin, isopropyl myristate, stearic acid, cetyl alcohol; in this case, much of the product is composed of water, glycerin and a synthetically created oil, isopropyl myristate.

Instead, look for products that have only genuine botanicals listed and natural emollient butters and oils.

Our products are manufactured to be used within 12 months and the ingredients we source for our products are

  • Carrer oils from nuts, seeds and fruit – amorettam body and face creams
  • Hydrosols, by-products of the steam distillation process – amorettam floral waters
  • Butters, from nuts, beans and seeds – amorettam body butters
  • Candelila wax – amorettam lip salves
  • Vegetable glycerin and Castille soap – amorettam body washes

Our products and our ingredients can be kept truly pure and highly potent, as no synthetic preservatives, nor other additives, are needed to artificially prolong the stability and shelf life of the products.
